Within families and majority shareholder-run businesses, the themes of succession and continuity are almost always at play as they are, in essence, the product of succession within the family. The issue of succession does not apply solely to the financial and economic continuity or the value of the business itself, but rather to other forms such as the value for employees, the company culture or the community. Historically, these things are regarded differently than they are in non-family businesses. When succession of family members or the majority shareholder is not possible from within, an outside leader must be found and succession becomes a more complex theme.
